SARS Goes Digital: Why It’s More Important Than Ever to Share Correspondence With Your Accountant

At our firm, we’re committed to helping you stay compliant, informed, and stress-free when it comes to tax matters. Whether it’s VAT, PAYE, or Income Tax, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

But we need your help with something important.

No More Paper Letters From SARS

As of 31 May 2025, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially discontinued the printing and posting of all system-generated letters. From now on, all SARS correspondence will be delivered electronically via eFiling and other digital platforms.

This means you will no longer receive physical letters in the mail — and if you don’t check your eFiling profile or email regularly, you might miss something important.

You can read more about this change on the official SARS website here:

Why You Should Forward SARS Emails to Us

SARS sends out a wide range of communications — from assessments and verifications to reminders and updates. While we do our best to monitor client profiles, we simply can’t log into every client’s SARS account for every tax type on a daily basis.

That’s why we kindly ask: please forward any SARS emails or digital correspondence to us as soon as you receive them. This helps us act quickly and accurately on your behalf.

Create Your Own SARS eFiling Profile — Stay in Control

We strongly encourage all individual taxpayers and businesses to create their own SARS eFiling profiles and grant us shared access. This empowers you to:

  • Stay in control of your own tax affairs

  • Easily check if anything needs to be updated or corrected

  • Receive SARS correspondence directly

  • Apply for tax directives (which can only be done through your own eFiling profile — we cannot do this on your behalf)

Important for importers and exporters:
If you are involved in imports or exports, you will need an APN (Advance Payment Notification) number. This process requires you to be registered on your own SARS eFiling profile. Without your own profile, you won’t be able to apply for or manage APNs, which are now a critical part of cross-border transactions.

Having your own eFiling profile is not just a good idea — it’s becoming essential in the digital age of tax administration.

We’re Only Human — and We’re Doing Our Best

We’re proud of the service we provide and the relationships we’ve built with our clients. But like everyone, we have our limits. With many clients to support, your help in sharing SARS updates ensures we can continue to offer the high-quality service you expect from us.

A Small Habit That Makes a Big Difference

So next time you get a message from SARS — whether it’s about VAT, PAYE, or Income Tax — just hit forward and send it our way. It’s a small step that helps us help you better.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. We’re here for you, and we appreciate your partnership in keeping everything running smoothly.
