SARS eFiling Profile Changes

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has introduced a new security measure for individual taxpayers using the eFiling system.

Starting from 22 November 2024, SARS will require all individual taxpayers to register a cellphone number to their eFiling profile and enter a One Time Pin (OTP) for certain actions. This new requirement aims to enhance the security of your tax profile and protect your personal information.

How Does It Work?

  1. Registering Your Cellphone Number:

    • Log into your SARS eFiling profile.

    • Navigate to "My Profile" and select "Profile and Preference Setup".

    • Update your contact details under the "Security Contact Details" section by entering your new cellphone number.

    • Click on "Update & Save".

  2. Receiving and Entering the OTP:

    • Once you update your contact details, SARS will send a One Time Pin to your registered cellphone number.

    • Enter the OTP in the provided field to confirm the update.

This new security measure is crucial for safeguarding your tax information. By ensuring that only you have access to your eFiling profile, SARS aims to prevent unauthorized access and potential fraud.

Impact on Tax Return Submissions

If we submit your tax return on your eFiling profile and not on ours, we will need to get the OTP before we can submit your return. This might cause delays in the submission process.

To avoid any potential delays, we recommend that you grant us access as your tax agents on our profile. This will streamline the process and ensure timely submission of your tax returns.

What If My Contact Details Change?

If both your email and cellphone number change, you will need to contact the SARS Contact Centre or visit a SARS branch office for authentication. This step is necessary to update your security contact details and ensure that you continue to receive your OTPs without any issues.
